Every Councillor is required to sign up to the Council Code of Conduct which sets the standard of behaviour expected of members of the Council in their representation of the community. The Code of Conduct can be found under the Policies section of our website - click here

Becoming a Councillor

Councillors have three main components to their work.

1. Decision making - through meeting and attending committees with other elected members / councillors, to decide; which activities to support; where money should be spent, what policies should be implented and services delivered

2. Monitoring – councillors make sure that their decisions lead to efficient and effective services, by evaluating how things are working

3. Getting involved locally – as local representatives, councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. These responsibilities and duties often depend on what the councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available.  This may include:

  • Going to meetings of local organisations
  • Going to meetings of bodies affecting the wider community
  • Taking up issues on behalf of members of the public
  • Running a surgery for residents to bring up issues
  • Meeting with individual constituents

Visit council meetings on this website or give the council a call to find out when the next public meeting takes place.   By law the public and press are allowed to be present at all council business, excluding confidential matters.

Councillors are elected to represent an individual geographical unit on the council known as a ward.

Radstock is made up of 4 wards including: Clandown, Haydon, Radstock Central and Writhlington. Councillors are generally elected by the public every four years.
